Learn to play the piano without reading notes (windows XP, 7, 8, 10 or higher).
EtudiX Piano Tutor is a program to help you visually learn to play the piano or keyboard without learning to read music scores in a traditional way. EtudiX is meant for people who have a good musical ear but who find it difficult to learn the classical music theory of notes, bars and measures.
With EtudiX you can:
The first prerequisite for learning to play a piece using EtudiX, is that you already listened to the piece several times, so that you can almost sing or whistle the piece by heart. In other words, you can sing along with the tempo and the main melody of the piece. This is very important since EtudiX does not show the tempo or accents of a piece, it only shows you visually where to put your fingers on the keyboard.
The second prerequisite is that you have a decent midi file of the piece you want to learn. Millions of midi files can be found on the Internet. Note however that you will have more satisfactory results with EtudiX, if the midi file was not recorded from a live keyboard player, but created by inputting the exact notes from the original score i.e. if the notes are quantized to the exact tempo of the score. If you cannot find a quantized version of your piece, you can always quantize the piece yourself using a midi editing program like Steinberg Cubase or Cakewalk Sonar.
You can download EtudiX Piano Tutor 1.2.5 here. After downloading, install the software. After installation read the help file and/or follow the small tutorial below. The unregistered version is fully functional. It only shows a nag screen every 10 minutes.
Important Remark: When starting EtudiX on Windows 10 and higher you may receive a message that "class msstdfmt.dll" is missing. You can fix this by downloading msstdfmt.dll and registering it as follows:

Learning to play a music piece with EtudiX is very simple.
Basic steps to use EtudiX
- Step 1: Open a Midi file
- Step 2: Select a Midi In and Midi Out Device
- Step 3: Select a Track from the Midi file
- Step 4: Select a Program (Instrument)
- Step 5: Learn to play visually using the navigation buttons and a Piano or Midi Keyboard
Navigation
You step thru the midi file using the navigation buttons.
You step forward thru the midi file using the Step Forward button.
You step backward thru the midi file using the Step Backward button.
You can go to the beginning and end of a midi file using the Goto Begin and Goto End buttons.
You can also listen to the midi file continuously by using the Play and Reset button.
Chord Mode and Note Mode
There are basically two learning modes: Chord Mode and Note Mode. In Chord mode you step thru the midi file chord by chord. This means that when keys on the keyboard need to be hit together, they will be shown together. Since the midi music format does not know the concept of chords, a heuristic algorithm within EtudiX groups notes together as chords. Chord detection depends upon the quality of your midi file. In Note Mode you step thru the midi file one note at a time.
Marker
You can set a marker to help you remember a certain point in your midi file. When a marker is set you can easily return to that note or chord. You can set a marker using the Set Mark button. The mark will be displayed in the marker textbox. You can immediately go back to that mark by clicking the Goto Mark button.
Midi Keyboard or Piano
You can learn to play using a Midi Keyboard or a Piano. A Midi Keyboard is not strictly necessary, but the advantage is that you see the keys you play in blue.
